Central Florida’s Birdwatching Scene: An Invitation to Nature Lovers
If you’re a fan of feathered friends and gorgeous landscapes, Central Florida is calling your name! With beautiful eco-tours, vibrant community involvement, and dedicated conservation efforts, there’s never been a better time to grab your binoculars and explore the birdwatching scene. In this lovely area, nature enthusiasts can dive into exciting adventures while contributing to the preservation of our avian companions.
The Great Eco-Tours Await!
Captain Eric Gilhart has been leading eco-tours at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate for the past 13 years, and he knows all about the thrills and surprises that come with watching wildlife. These two-hour eco-tours combine a fun ride in a golf cart for one hour and a leisurely kayak trip for the second hour. Keep your camera ready, as wildlife sightings can be quite unpredictable, adding a dash of excitement to every tour!
Visitors are particularly fond of the No. 8 pond right in front of the hotel. It’s a hotspot for spotting a delightful range of birds as well as some sunbathing alligators. February, in particular, is an exciting month for birdwatchers and alligator seekers alike. This is when many creatures seek warmth, making it much easier for you to catch a glimpse of them in action!
Join the Orange Audubon Society!
Speaking of birds, did you know that Florida’s second-largest chapter of the Audubon Society, the Orange Audubon Society, has been actively promoting birdwatching and conservation efforts for an impressive 57 years? They offer field trips for all levels, beginner classes, and even workshops specifically for young birders. Plus, they maintain an engaging YouTube channel filled with birding resources to enrich your learning experience.
The society is currently making strides towards developing the new Apopka Birding Park, a promising project at a former nursery site. They’ve successfully obtained a lease and are hoping to open the park in the Spring of 2025. It’s a fantastic opportunity for birdwatching aficionados to connect and enjoy nature together!
Birding Etiquette and Prime Locations
For those just starting out, Mead Garden is a stellar choice. Its manageable size and variety of habitats make it a perfect introduction to birdwatching. Plus, February marks the arrival of neotropical birds, making your chance of spotting something new even higher!
