Empowering Dreams: African American Chamber of Commerce Drives Growth for Black Entrepreneurs in Central Florida

Orlando is buzzing with excitement as the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida announces a wave of new initiatives aimed at uplifting Black-owned and minority businesses. Established in 1945, this chamber has been a beacon of hope for local entrepreneurs, working tirelessly to support and empower the community. With a robust membership of 950, the chamber provides a wealth of resources including entrepreneur training, development classes, business cohorts, and crucial access to capital.

The Face of Change: Rod Thompson Leads the Way

Among the noteworthy entrepreneurs associated with the chamber is Rod Thompson, the dynamic CEO of FastSigns North-Orlando. With his passion for business and a strong belief in the power of signage, Thompson highlights a critical lesson in the industry: “A business with no sign is a sign of no business.” This mantra resonates with small business owners who know that visibility is key to success.

Thompson’s journey began back in 2010 in the printing industry alongside his father, Rodney Sr. Following a recommendation from his dad, they made the brave decision to invest in a FastSigns franchise, leading to the successful launch of locations in both North-Orlando and Brandon. Tragically, Thompson’s father passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy of motivation and a reminder to always push forward.

What makes Thompson’s story even more inspiring is that among the approximately 750 FastSigns franchises across the nation, only around 12-13 of them are Black-owned. However, Thompson takes pride in serving customers from all walks of life, ensuring that his business embraces diversity.

Testimonials Galore: Satisfied Customers Sing Praises

Samuel Barrington, president of Sky Limit Crane & Rigging, has been a loyal customer of Thompson’s for five years. He appreciates the solution-based approach that FastSigns brings to the table. Barrington is also a proud member of the chamber, recognizing the immense value that networking brings to local businesses. The connections made through the chamber are vital for growth, especially as small business owners aim to make their mark.

A Gala of Excellence: Celebrating Black Businesses

The commitment of the chamber doesn’t stop at membership services. This year, they will host the 21st Annual Eagle Awards Gala on February 28, 2024. This prestigious event aims to shine a spotlight on the excellence of Black businesses in Central Florida, celebrating their contributions to the local economy.

In partnership with Orlando Credit Union, the African American Chamber has initiated programs like the ‘Coffee & Commerce’ series. This initiative is designed to gather local business owners and entrepreneurs to share ideas, support one another, and foster growth. Networking events like these introduce the community to new opportunities and mentorship.

Higher Aspirations: Educational Initiatives for Entrepreneurs

For inspiring Black entrepreneurs looking to turn their dreams into reality, the chamber, in collaboration with Florida Technical College, is offering a full scholarship valued at up to $61,178. This initiative aims to support local entrepreneurs keen on creating new business ventures. The application deadline is set for February 12, 2024, with the recipient to be announced on February 22, 2024, providing a golden opportunity for aspiring business owners.

Additionally, the Orlando Credit Union Charitable Foundation is launching the Grace Chewning Scholarship Program in 2025, which will award five scholarships of $1,000 each. This program aims to uplift educational pursuits within the Central Florida community, echoing Chewning’s long-standing commitment to education.

The scholarship applications can be found on the Orlando Credit Union’s website, opening doors for many in the community looking to further their education.

The Road Ahead

As Central Florida continues to grow and evolve, the African American Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to ensuring that Black entrepreneurs do not just survive but thrive. With ample resources, networking opportunities, and scholarship programs, the future looks promising for many budding business owners in the region.

From Thompson to Barrington, and many others, the message is clear: working together and supporting one another can help lift the entire community to new heights. The time has come to rally around these initiatives and celebrate the remarkable contributions Black entrepreneurs make to our vibrant economy.
