New Affordable Townhome Development Proposed in Orlando

Orlando, FL – A significant housing development is on the horizon for the Washington Shores neighborhood, as The Hope Church and its nonprofit organization, The Village of Orlando, unveil plans to construct 102 townhomes. The proposed site spans approximately 11 acres and involves the redevelopment of several residential properties currently owned by the church.

Who is Behind the Project?

The development project is spearheaded by Reginald Wallace of Wallace Development Partners, a local firm based in Orlando. The initiative, supported by The Hope Church of Orlando, aims to expand affordable housing options in a neighborhood that has seen various developmental changes over the years.

What’s in the Plan?

According to documents submitted to the city, the townhomes will range from two to three stories, featuring multiple bedroom configurations. Each unit will include two-car garages with rear-loading access via alleyways. While most of the units are anticipated to be offered at market rates, 18 units will be designated for families earning between 80% and 120% of the area’s median income, aiming to align with the community’s affordable housing needs.

Where Will This Happen?

The project is set to take place in the Washington Shores area of west Orlando, specifically on 15 parcels currently housing rental units, a church building, and an attached school. The community will also benefit from a planned walking trail that will encircle a newly designed widened retention pond and an area for a dog park will be created by claiming part of Piedmont Street.

When Will This Development Move Forward?

While a timeline for construction has not been disclosed, the plans have been formally submitted to the city of Orlando for review. The proposal must go through various approvals and processes before any construction can begin, typically a lengthy undertaking in urban development.

Why is This Project Important?

This housing initiative is crucial for the Washington Shores community as it seeks to address pressing needs for affordable housing within Orlando. By partnering with non-profit organizations like The Village of Orlando, the project brings a focused approach to improve housing accessibility while also enhancing local amenities such as parks and recreational areas.

Recent Developments Related to The Village of Orlando

In addition to the townhome project, The Village of Orlando recently made headlines by purchasing the nearby Nap Ford Community School for $8.6 million. Originally established to serve the Parramore community in 2001 and relocated in 2015, the school has now closed, but plans for its utilization remain undisclosed.

Conclusion

The proposed townhome development in Washington Shores represents an essential step towards improving living conditions for many Orlando residents. As plans move forward, the focus will remain on ensuring that affordable housing remains a priority in the ongoing urban development of Orlando.
