Orlando is gearing up for a significant political shift as State Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat from Orlando, has officially filed paperwork to run for mayor in the upcoming 2027 election. This announcement comes after the current mayor, Buddy Dyer, confirmed that he will retire after his current term, which began in 2023.
Eskamani, who has been a prominent voice in the Florida House of Representatives since 2018, is recognized for advocating issues related to working-class families and criticizing corporate influence in government. At just 34 years old, she has established herself as a charismatic leader unafraid to challenge established norms.
She aims to introduce a “people-centered approach” to city leadership if elected, focusing on addressing pressing issues like homelessness, public safety, support for small businesses, and affordability. In her statement, she emphasized the need for bold and creative solutions to tackle everyday challenges faced by Orlando’s residents.
Eskamani revealed that she first considered running for mayor during a conversation with Dyer in 2021, where he indicated he would not seek another term after 2023. Her motivations stem from her deep connection to Orlando, where she grew up and is committed to enhancing local governance.
Understanding the importance of grassroots campaigning, Eskamani stated, “When you run a grassroots campaign, the more time you have, the better.” Unlike administration counterparts who receive backing from large corporations and tourism industries, she emphasizes the need for a campaign funded by community support and donations.
A daughter of immigrant parents, Eskamani is a graduate of the University of Central Florida, where she earned her Ph.D. in public administration. Her journey has been shaped by personal experiences, including losing her mother to cancer at age 13, which motivated her to serve her community. She has previously worked for Planned Parenthood as a senior director, showcasing her commitment to health and social justice.
In addition to her legislative role, Eskamani serves on the boards of several arts and community organizations, illustrating her dedication to local culture and the arts.
As she begins her campaign, Eskamani has already garnered early endorsements from various elected officials, including U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost and State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith. The support indicates a growing momentum as she appeals to the community’s desire for effective and responsive leadership.
Looking ahead, Eskamani’s campaign will be focused on engaging with Orlando’s residents through her website, which will provide opportunities for donations and volunteer sign-ups. She plans to launch an Orlando’s Future Survey to gather feedback from citizens about their vision for the city.
With her strong advocacy background and a clear vision for the future, Anna Eskamani’s candidacy for mayor represents a new chapter for Orlando. As the city prepares to bid farewell to Buddy Dyer’s long leadership, the voters will have the opportunity to shape their city’s direction in 2027.
