Anne Douglas Elected to Orange County School Board, Making History!

Orlando, Florida – Big news is coming out of the Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) district as Anne Douglas has made history by being elected to the School Board. This event is particularly special because it is the very first time that two Black individuals—Douglas and fellow member Vicki Felder—will serve on the School Board at the same time.

A Seasoned Educator

Anne Douglas isn’t just any board member. With an impressive 25 years of teaching experience within OCPS, she has seen firsthand the ins and outs of the educational system. Douglas is not just knowledgeable; she is also fluent in three languages, which adds a unique flair to her approach as an educator. As someone who believes strongly in the importance of high-quality education, she aims to bring her experiences to the board, ensuring meaningful change and improvements across the district.

Community Confidence

Her election is a clear sign that the community trusts her leadership abilities and recognizes her dedication to improving public education. The excitement surrounding her candidacy is palpable, and her election is viewed as a pivotal moment for OCPS. With her extensive background in education, Douglas emphasizes that having experienced educators in leadership roles is crucial for fostering a system that is not only effective but also inclusive.

Upcoming Challenges

The OCPS School Board is gearing up for some important discussions to improve school safety. In January, they plan to start meetings with five cities regarding school resource officer contracts. There are discussions on possibly replacing some School Resource Officers (SROs) with school guardians, which is a hot topic in the community. The board is currently negotiating contracts to keep SROs in 30 schools located in areas like Apopka, Ocoee, Winter Garden, and Winter Park.

One issue on the table includes a proposed 20% salary increase for SROs that would boost their pay to $72,000 during the 2024-2025 school year and lead to further increases by 2026-2027. However, the district has reported budget constraints that limit their ability to offer higher salaries. As a result, some schools may need to transition to guardians who have restricted intervention capabilities and lack arrest authority, raising concerns about safety.

Teacher Compensation and Struggles

Teacher salaries in Orange County add another layer of complexity to these discussions. Recent hearings revealed that teacher salaries rank only 31st in Florida. The Orange County Classroom Teachers Association has proposed a 4.4% raise to help address the compensation fairness issue affecting teachers in the district. While the board is open to some recommendations for improving teacher compensation, they rejected a proposal for a full parental leave program due to funding limitations.

The Race for District 4

In the race for the OCPS District 4 seat, two candidates are vying for the position. Alongside Douglas is Kyle Goudy, who emphasizes his business development background as a significant asset for the School Board. Both candidates share a deep concern for the financial challenges that affect the quality of education in the district, making this race particularly crucial for the future of OCPS.

What’s Next?

The general election is set for November 5, and as the community rallies behind their candidates, the future of Orange County’s educational landscape hangs in the balance. With such pressing issues at hand, Douglas and Goudy’s contrasting experiences and visions for the district present an exciting yet challenging opportunity for voters.

Stay tuned as more developments unfold, and let’s hope for some positive change in the Orange County school system!
