ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The community is in mourning following the death of Bob Hattaway, a respected political figure and former chair of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. Hattaway passed away on November 22 at the age of 88, as confirmed by an obituary. His contributions to both local and state governance have left a lasting impact.

Hattaway served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1974 to 1982, representing the 33rd district. His tenure in the House was marked by his commitment to public service and community development. He was appointed to the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority by then-Governor Lawton Chiles, where he played a significant role overseeing operations at Orlando International Airport and Orlando Executive Airport throughout the 1990s.

A Legacy in Aviation

During his eight years on the authority, four of which he served as chair, Hattaway witnessed substantial growth at Orlando International Airport. In an oral history interview conducted in 2012 by historian Daniel Motta for the Museum of Seminole County History, he shared that when he started his work, the airport hosted approximately 22 million passengers. By the time he concluded his service, that number had soared to over 31 million.

This dramatic increase in passenger traffic is indicative of Hattaway’s significant role in shaping the infrastructure and operations of one of Florida’s busiest airports. His leadership helped position Orlando as a major travel hub, benefiting the local economy and enhancing tourism in the region.

Community Impact

Beyond the airports, Hattaway’s influence extended into various facets of community life in Altamonte Springs and the greater Orlando area. His commitment to public service was evident in his outreach efforts and dedication to improving the lives of local residents. Friends, colleagues, and community members remember him as a leader who was always ready to lend a helping hand.

As news of Hattaway’s passing spread, many took to social media to express their condolences and share memories of the former representative. His leadership and vision left an indelible mark on the community, and his legacy will be felt for years to come.

Remembering a Public Servant

Funeral arrangements and memorial services are expected to be announced in the coming days, providing the community with an opportunity to pay their respects to a man who dedicated much of his life to public service. Hattaway’s contributions to aviation, local government, and community welfare will not be forgotten as Altamonte Springs reflects on his legacy.

As the community comes to terms with the loss of Bob Hattaway, it stands united in appreciation of his dedication and service. His life reminds us of the importance of public service and its power to effect positive change within society.
