In 2024, Carly Cummins set ambitious golfing goals, including achieving a scratch handicap. Facing weather challenges and life changes, she remains hopeful as she looks ahead to competing again for her local team and refining her skills. With a resilient mindset, she has laid out a game plan to improve her performance and enjoys sharing her passion for golf with others.
It’s that exciting time of the year when golfers sit down, look back at their past year, and figure out what comes next. Carly Cummins, an enthusiastic golfer, found herself setting some pretty ambitious goals at the start of 2024 during a Dorset County squad training session. She laid out seven key targets that she was determined to hit, and while the journey has had its bumps, Cummins remains ever hopeful about her future in this sport!
Right at the top of her list? Achieving a scratch handicap. This is no small feat, and it’s something Cummins has been aiming for ever since she first picked up a club. It’s a goal she has narrowly missed in her younger golfing days. She kicked off the year with a handicap index of 3.4, but due to a few challenging circumstances, she’s currently sitting at 3.6. This might sound like a setback, but let’s dive into what has been going on!
So, what went wrong? First, let’s talk about the weather, or should we say the awful weather? It turned out to be the most challenging winter Carly has faced, leading to plenty of course closures and, unfortunately, a significant three-month dry spell without so much as a swing on the greens. While she did have access to driving ranges, the thrill of hitting those balls started to wear off quickly, and staying motivated was no easy task!
2024 has not only been a year of golfing dreams for Cummins but also a time of major lifestyle changes. Starting a new business, moving to a new home, coaching her son for his secondary exams, and navigating a divorce have all added a layer of complexity to her life. Yet, amid everything, she managed to nail down one of her goals by playing for the Dorset County Ladies team again.
But it wasn’t just about putting on a jersey. Durham County Ladies triumphed in the south-west matchweek held at Perranporth Golf Club, leading to participation in the prestigious England Golf National finals at Stover Golf Club. Achievements like these fueled Cummins’ confidence and illuminated just how high the competition level is in women’s golf!
So, while her handicap numbers didn’t dip as low as she’d hoped, she refuses to be disappointed. Instead, Cummins sees this as just part of her ongoing journey and finds inspiration in goal-setting. She knows she needs to get back to the basics to fine-tune her practice routine and refine her technique heading into the future. With aims to still reach that elusive scratch handicap before she turns 50 and hopes of competing in the England seniors circuit, she’s not backing down.
Carly has laid out her game plan for improvement, including a variety of goals aimed at making her golf experience even more fulfilling. These include:
As she looks to the future, Cummins expresses a hopeful outlook, especially regarding the weather. Here’s to hoping for optimal conditions in the coming winter so that she can work diligently toward her goals without any interruptions! If 2024 has taught her anything, it’s that there will be challenges, but with persistence and the right mindset, those ambitions can still shine through.
