Exciting New Book “Cutline Is King” Takes the Turf Industry by Storm

In the bustling city of Gainesville, a remarkable new book titled “Cutline Is King” has just hit the shelves, and it’s causing quite a stir amongst turf equipment managers, superintendents, and golf course enthusiasts alike. Written by industry pro Mike Rollins, this volume is packed with experiences, insightful tips, and practical techniques designed to help readers master the art of cutting unit tracking.

From Mechanic to Author

Mike Rollins didn’t embark on his career as a turf expert overnight. Growing up, he was immersed in mechanical repair, a backdrop that would serve him well. As he pursued his film and media studies at the University of Florida, he found himself uncertain about his future in the mechanical world. After a few years of bouncing around various jobs and even subcontracting film work, everything changed for him in 2011 when he met his wife, Anne. Little did he know that her family owned SIP Grinders, a large player in the turf industry.

Rollins jumped headfirst into his new job as the regional sales manager in 2020, marking a pivotal return to mechanics—albeit through a slightly different lens. His journey took him to places like the Michigan GCSA Conference and Trade Show right before the world shut down due to COVID-19. During this period, he spent time learning about turf equipment and machinery, ultimately realizing the crucial role of equipment managers.

A Journey of Discovery

During a formative trip to the Atlanta Athletic Club, Rollins observed the intricacies of turf management up close. “Equipment managers are the backbone of a golf course,” he shares. “Without them, the course simply wouldn’t exist.” This revelation illuminated his path, leading to the creation of something special.

From Presentation to Publication

Fast forward to December 2021; Rollins faced a challenge when asked to give a presentation at a Michigan Turfgrass Foundation show. He didn’t have a complete presentation, but he was determined. He spent two weeks compiling his initial notes and experiences into a 90-slide deck, which would be the genesis of “Cutline Is King”.

To add depth to his work, Rollins sought out the previous presentations made by industry veterans like Mark Pilger and John Patterson. By synthesizing their insights with his knowledge gained from daily visits to golf courses, he created a dynamic resource that resonates with real-world experience.

A Resource for Everyone

Rollins believes that the information contained in his book should be shared freely. “Sharing knowledge not only empowers individuals but also fosters growth within the whole industry,” he emphasizes. “Cutline Is King” has morphed into much more than just a presentation; it now includes over 300 slides full of invaluable tips, experiences, and easily digestible knowledge aimed at helping others thrive.

The Power of Sharing Knowledge

When he reflects on his college days, Rollins recalls a paper he wrote about song sampling. He compares sharing insights in the turf industry to that creative process, suggesting that when knowledge is shared, it can be transformed and put to better use. “It’s all about making us all better,” he states passionately, echoing the mantra that “a rising tide lifts all boats.

Since officially releasing the book on November 17, it has been downloaded nearly 1,400 times, showing a significant interest in the turf management community. While currently available in PDF format for free download, he has plans to release a physical copy in the near future.

Closing Thoughts

For anyone interested in turf management or looking to enhance their understanding of cutting units, “Cutline Is King” is a must-read. It serves as a guide filled with practical tips that can only come from hands-on experience in the field. As Rollins puts it, “It’s not about me; it’s about getting information out there and pushing this whole industry forward.
