On February 9, 2025, the community of Plymouth, Massachusetts, said goodbye to a remarkable woman, Commander Patricia M. Howell, who left an indelible mark not only in the military but also in the hearts of those who knew her. Patricia’s journey began on April 29, 1940, in Buffalo, New York, and her spirit never ceased to inspire everyone around her.
Patricia’s family made a significant move to Pulaski, New York, in 1950, and it was there she laid the foundation for her bright future. After graduating from Pulaski Academy and Central School in 1959, she pursued her passion for nursing. She earned her nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Syracuse, graduating in 1961, followed by a Bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1963. Patricia didn’t stop there; she went on to obtain her Master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1973.
In 1964, Patricia made a significant decision to join the U.S. Navy. Her 24-year service was commendable, with cherished memories including time spent in locations such as Newport, Rhode Island, San Diego, California, Yokosuka, Japan, Great Lakes, Illinois, Naples, Italy, and Norfolk, Virginia. She concluded her naval career in October 1989, with her last duty station being in sunny Orlando, Florida.
Patricia’s commitment to her family and community was unwavering. She married Lt. Commander Franklin Howell in 1983, an accomplished Navy pilot from World War II. Together, they shared a passion for the game of golf, being active members of the Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, where Patricia took part in the women’s “Nifty Niners” golf league. Tragically, Franklin passed away in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment.
Beyond her military and personal achievements, Patricia was a soul deeply connected to the music she loved. She often performed in various settings and cherishing her role in the church choir at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park, Florida. One of the highlights of her musical journey occurred in 2003 when she had the incredible experience of performing for Pope John Paul II during a visit to Italy.
Patricia will be interred at the Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to her service and dedication to her country. As her family mourns the loss of their beloved sister and aunt, they have kindly requested that memorial donations in Patricia’s name be directed to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park, Florida. This gesture will help honor her love for music and community.
As we remember Commander Patricia M. Howell, we celebrate a life that was a beautiful blend of service, family, music, and love. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the importance of dedication to one’s passion, community, and family. She will be missed, but her spirit will live on in the stories shared and the memories cherished by all who loved her.
