Flags at Half-Staff Across Florida to Honor Three Slain Servicemen on Anniversary of Pensacola Shooting

Pensacola, Florida – Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Slain Servicemen

On Friday, December 6, 2024, flags across Florida will be flown at half-staff in memory of three servicemen who lost their lives during a tragic shooting incident at Naval Air Station Pensacola. The order was issued by Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday, recognizing the somber anniversary of the attack that occurred five years ago.

Commemoration of Victims

The attack, which took place on December 6, 2019, was carried out by a member of the Saudi Royal Air Force, 2nd Lt. Mohammed Alshamrani. The shooting resulted in the deaths of three U.S. Navy personnel: Naval Aircrewman 3rd Class Mohammed Sameh Haitham, Naval Aircrewman 3rd Class Cameron Scott Walters, and Ensign Joshua Kaleb Watson, who were aged between 19 and 23 years old. In addition to the fatalities, eight other individuals sustained injuries during the incident.

Proclamation from the Governor

In a formal statement, Governor DeSantis expressed his condolences, stating, “On December 6, 2019, a terrorist at Naval Air Station Pensacola took the lives of three U.S. Navy sailors and injured others. As a mark of respect for the victims, I signed the attached Proclamation directing the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida from sunrise to sunset.”

The Attack and Investigation

Naval Air Station Pensacola serves as a vital training facility for both U.S. military personnel and members of allied forces. Following the 2019 shooting, a U.S. Navy investigation determined that Alshamrani had undergone a process of self-radicalization while in training at the base. Reports indicated that his supervisors had no knowledge of him purchasing the Glock-45 handgun used in the shooting.

Ongoing Remembrance

The tragic event on that day deeply affected the local community and the nation as a whole. In remembrance, local ceremonies and moments of silence are often observed to honor the fallen servicemen. This year, the half-staff flag order reflects the continuing commitment to recognizing the sacrifices made by military personnel.

The Importance of Vigilance

The incident has also prompted discussions on national security and the effectiveness of vetting processes for foreign military trainees. Many have called for a thorough review of existing protocols to ensure that such an act of violence does not happen again.

As the state of Florida prepares for the somber anniversary, citizens are reminded of the significance of this day. The flag at half-staff will serve as a symbol of respect and remembrance for the bravery and dedication of the servicemen who lost their lives while serving their country.

In conclusion, Friday’s observance is not only a tribute to the fallen but also a call to the community to come together in remembrance, reflection, and respect for those who serve. The memory of the victims will linger as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel every day.
