Featuring over 6,600 educational seats and 470 trade show exhibits, the event emphasized sustainability and honored outstanding contributors in the industry. With competitive golf championships and a commitment to developing future leaders, the gathering showcased a vibrant community passionate about enhancing the golf experience. Plans are already underway for the next conference in San Diego in 2025.
The much-anticipated 2024 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show has wrapped up in a dazzling fashion, attracting nearly 11,000 attendees eager to dive into the latest trends, innovations, and educational workshops within the golf industry. This event set the stage for an unforgettable experience, showcasing the heart and soul of golf course management.
What’s even more impressive? The conference boasted over 6,600 seminar seats, marking the highest occupancy rates since 2008. Attendees ranged from superintendents and assistant superintendents to equipment managers and students, each keen to absorb specialized education tailored to their unique roles in the industry. The organizers laid out various educational formats, mixing traditional classroom settings with seven interactive facility tours at local golf courses. Attendees were thrilled to have hands-on experiences, making the learning process not only informative but also engaging.
As if the educational offerings weren’t enough, the trade show was a spectacle in itself, stretching across a vast 352,000 square feet of exhibit space at the Phoenix Convention Center. With a whopping 470 exhibits on display, participants could explore the latest innovations in the golf course industry and interact with exhibitors directly. In fact, this section of the event sold out, much to the delight of all involved.
The excitement started even before the main conference with the GCSAA Golf Championships, an event supported by Toro for an impressive 30 years in a row. The golf outing attracted 638 unique golfers who showcased their skills in various flighted competitions held across an impressive lineup of six golf courses. Seth Strickland from the Miami Beach Golf Club clinched the encounter, marking his sixth National Championship win, while Joshua Troutman from Crestview Country Club took home the title in the Golf Classic. This competitive spirit truly underscored the connection between camaraderie and competition.
One of the most thrilling new initiatives was the introduction of Golf’s Sustainability Showcase. This incredible platform, a collaborative effort involving multiple golf organizations, featured interactive displays focusing on sustainability practices within the industry. This showcase allowed attendees to engage with vital storytelling around sustainable golf course management, truly a step forward for the industry.
The event also featured a heartfelt Sunrise Celebration, honoring the outstanding achievements of individuals in the industry. Dottie Pepper was recognized with the Old Tom Morris Award, while Tenia Workman received the Outstanding Contribution Award. Not to mention, Mike and Tami Hoffman made headlines themselves, announcing a generous $1 million donation to GCSAA First Green to support the STEAM Ahead initiative. This type of commitment to education and community development truly echoes the values of the industry.
The 2024 GCSAA Turf Bowl, celebrating its 30th anniversary, saw participation from 63 teams across 28 universities, with Purdue University Team 51 taking the crown. Highlighting the importance of developing new talent, the Ladies Leading Turf session will be evolving into Leading Turf Together in 2025 to emphasize the industry’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
As the conference came to a close, the Thursday Send-Off Celebration awarded the prestigious GCSAA Col. John Morley Award to William “Bill” Murray, alongside the Emerging Leader Award going to Richie Kremer. Additionally, Wayne Mills earned the GCSAA President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship, showcasing the growing focus on sustainability within golf.
Capping off this year’s festivities was a riveting keynote speech by Brendan McDonough, a survivor of the Yarnell Hill Wildfire, leaving attendees inspired and thoughtful.
As we bid farewell to this year’s gathering, enthusiasts are already buzzing about the next GCSAA Conference and Trade Show, set to take place from February 3-6, 2025, in sunny San Diego.
