Georgetown Welcomes Transfer Laila Jewett for 2025-26 Season

Washington D.C. – Laila Jewett, a talented guard from the University of Central Florida (UCF), has officially committed to Georgetown University for the upcoming 2025-26 college basketball season. The 5-foot-10 point guard made her decision known following a closely contested selection process that included offers from Oklahoma State, William & Mary, and East Carolina.

Who is Laila Jewett?

Laila Jewett has established herself as a formidable player during her time at UCF, filling the role of a full-time starting point guard last season. Over the course of the season, Jewett averaged 8.3 points and 3.4 assists per game, showcasing her abilities on both ends of the court. Originating from Woodbridge, Virginia, Jewett’s basketball journey has been marked by her determination and ambition to play at the highest levels.

What Led to Her Decision?

Jewett’s commitment to Georgetown stemmed from both her admiration for the team’s culture and her desire for personal growth. “I’m a big believer in God, so I was really just trying to ask him to lead me to where he wanted me to go,” she explained. She expressed immense excitement about joining the Hoyas, highlighting the moment she saw the team’s defensive intensity while attending a game against Colgate during her visit. “That’s something that really stood out to me, just the way they fly around, just the way they look playing together and the chemistry,” Jewett noted.

Why Georgetown?

The chemistry among the players and their evident passion for the game were significant factors in Jewett’s decision. Observing the camaraderie and commitment within the team persuaded her that this was the right place for her. Jewett also expressed enthusiasm about her future relationship with Coach Darnell Haney. “He’s super, super, super intense,” Jewett said. “But he balances that with moments of laughter, which is something I need as a player.”

Coach and Development Focus

Another integral aspect of Jewett’s choice was the opportunity to work with Coach Kelly Mazzante, who has a distinguished background, including seven years in the WNBA. Jewett conveyed her eagerness to learn from Mazzante, stating, “I’m just super excited to pick her brain and take all her nuggets.” With aspirations to advance to higher levels of play, Jewett perceives Georgetown as a crucial stepping stone toward achieving her professional basketball dreams.

Next Steps for the Hoyas

As Jewett prepares for her transition to Georgetown, the program is set to benefit from her experience and skills on the court. Her decision adds further depth to the Hoyas’ roster and aligns with their commitment to building a competitive team for the next season. Georgetown University’s women’s basketball program is looking forward to what Jewett will bring both on and off the court, as they aim for success in the upcoming seasons.

Jewett’s transfer represents a significant move not only for her career but also for the Georgetown women’s basketball program, which seeks to bolster its ambitions in collegiate basketball under the guidance of dedicated coaching staff and teamwork-oriented players.
