The Winter Park community comes together at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, fostering cultural exchange and celebration.
The Winter Park community is adapting to significant changes following the departure of Barbara Chandler, the longtime manager of the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. Chandler’s unexpected firing has raised questions about the future of the center. Currently, it is co-managed by Fairolyn Livingston and Mary Daniels while a search for a new manager is underway. Despite the challenges, Chandler plans to remain engaged with the community through her production company and upcoming events that celebrate women’s contributions in the arts.
In the heart of Winter Park, big changes are happening at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. Just last month, the center’s longtime manager, Barbara Chandler, was unexpectedly let go via email by the outgoing executive director of the Crealdé School of Art. Chandler had been a familiar face at the heritage center, playing a crucial role in promoting and celebrating the area’s historic Black community.
Chandler started her journey with the center back in 2009, volunteering her time and passion. Over the years, she climbed the ranks, becoming assistant manager in 2010 and eventually stepping into the role of manager. During her tenure, she was instrumental in expanding the venue’s programming, introducing exciting events and even creating walking tours that connected visitors to Winter Park’s rich history. Her remarkable efforts even garnered her a spot on the Orlando Sentinel’s list of “10 people who make Central Florida a better place to live” in 2022.
However, Chandler’s departure raised eyebrows. The reasons behind her firing remain largely unclear. While she pointed to communication issues and unapproved partnerships as contributing factors, it’s a developing story that leaves many in the community pondering what lies ahead for the center. After her exit, the Heritage Center temporarily closed, but it has since reopened on January 19 for the Winter Park Unity Heritage Festival, delighting locals eager for cultural exploration.
While there is currently a search underway for a new permanent manager, the center is now co-managed by former manager Fairolyn Livingston and community activist Mary Daniels. They are stepping in to ensure that the center continues its mission of celebrating the community’s heritage. In the meantime, new Executive Director Emily Bourmas-Fry is committed to expanding community programs during this transition period.
Chandler, undeterred by her recent challenges, plans to stay actively involved in the Winter Park community. Through her company, Barbara Chandler Productions, she is set to continue bringing dynamic events to the area. She is currently producing exciting projects for FRAME, a creative incubator that supports photographers, as well as an ongoing cabaret series with Winter Park Playhouse designed to showcase diverse musical talents.
One of Chandler’s upcoming events, titled “Extraordinary Women and their Music,” is set for March 6 and will honor iconic female vocalists in celebration of Women’s History Month. This event promises to be a vibrant tribute to the contributions of women in the arts, furthering Chandler’s mission of highlighting diverse voices within the community.
Despite these recent changes, Chandler continues to emphasize the necessity of community partnerships for both her future endeavors and the ongoing success of the Heritage Center. Expressing her gratitude towards the community for their unwavering support, she’s optimistic about collaborating with volunteers and partners to help fulfill the center’s mission.
As Winter Park moves forward, the Heritage Center stands as a beacon of hope and unity. The community’s rich history is not only preserved within its walls but is also actively celebrated through ongoing events led by passionate individuals like Barbara Chandler. With new leadership at the helm and a community eager for connection, the future looks promising for the Hannibal Square Heritage Center.
