With a reported 390% increase in website visits just days prior to Hurricane Milton, it is clear that interest in these resilient homes is growing. Babcock Ranch has also proved itself capable of weathering storms, sustaining only minor damages during hurricanes. The development’s fieldhouse serves as a designated evacuation center, built to withstand winds up to 150 mph.
Experts point out that while no house can be truly hurricane-proof, communities like Hunters Point and Babcock Ranch are leading the charge toward innovative building practices. Techniques like reinforced connections in walls and ceilings are crucial in preventing structural failures during severe weather events. “Usually roofs blow off first,” explains Mike O’Reilly, a licensed engineer. In these new designs, the robust connections significantly enhance overall stability.

The shift towards resilient homes is reflected in the rising number of homeowners seeking to certify their properties as hurricane-resistant. The Fortified program, which evaluates homes based on their roofing structures among other criteria, has experienced a surge in applications. From fewer than 1,000 certifications in 2016, the number has climbed to nearly 70,000 over its lifetime.
