New Trade Office to Open in Italy

Viareggio, Italy—Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the establishment of a new international trade development office in Italy, slated to open in 2025. This office is part of the SelectFlorida initiative, which currently operates 18 offices across 16 countries around the world. The new location aims to assist Italian businesses interested in expanding their operations into Florida.

Strengthening Economic Ties

Governor DeSantis, along with Florida leadership, met with local officials and representatives from three renowned shipyards: Sanlorenzo, Benetti, and Overmarine. These shipyards have established operations in Florida cities like Pensacola, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. The discussions centered around boosting their investments in Florida’s ports and enhancing their operational footprint in the state.

A Global Leader in the Marine Industry

Florida boasts a robust maritime industry, and Governor DeSantis expressed pride in expanding the state’s presence in Italy. “Florida is greatly expanding its Italian presence,” he said. “Our brick-and-mortar presence here will continue the work of this trade mission in bringing more businesses, investment, and trade to Florida.” This expansion is particularly strategic given that Italy is a significant player in the yachting and boating industries.

Partnership Between Florida and Italy

The relationship between Florida and Italy covers several key sectors, including transportation, aerospace, defense, and life sciences. Over the past year, Florida’s primary export goods included yachts, civilian aircraft, vehicles, and pharmaceuticals. These industries represent critical targets for the state’s workforce development efforts.

Highlighting the Yacht Industry

FloridaCommerce Secretary J. Alex Kelly highlighted the success of the state’s yacht building sector, which incorporates approximately 500 shipbuilders who construct more yachts than the rest of the United States combined. “Viareggio is the epicenter of the world yacht building industry and Florida is the epicenter of the yacht building industry outside of Italy,” Kelly noted. Today’s meetings served to reinforce this connection and illustrate the value of a new SelectFlorida office dedicated to enhancing collaboration between Florida and Italy’s marine sectors.

Support from Transportation Leaders

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) voiced support for this trade mission, emphasizing the importance of economic cooperation between Florida’s seaports and Italian markets. “FDOT appreciates the leadership and opportunity from Governor DeSantis, Florida Commerce, and SelectFlorida to help show Florida seaports are open for business,” said Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E.

Conclusion

The establishment of the new SelectFlorida office in Italy marks a significant step towards strengthening economic ties between the two regions. As both Florida and Italy continue to thrive in maritime industries, this initiative holds promise for increased collaboration, investment, and job creation, benefiting both local economies.
