Excitement is in the air as the beloved indie pop band, Japanese Breakfast, unveils their brand new album titled For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women). Set to drop on March 21, 2025, via Dead Oceans, this upcoming album is expected to make waves in the music scene.
Fans of Japanese Breakfast can look forward to the lead single “Orlando In Love,” which has already been released, giving a taste of what’s to come. This album marks a significant moment for the band as it is considered their first full-fledged studio project, diverging from their usual DIY methods that have shaped their previous works.
This new album follows the critically acclaimed 2021 release, Jubilee, which received a Grammy nomination, and the heartfelt memoir, Crying In H Mart, penned by the band’s frontwoman, Michelle Zauner. Produced by the talented Grammy-Award winner Blake Mills—who has worked with artists like Feist and Perfume Genius—the new material is anticipated to bring a fresh yet heartfelt experience.
Diving deep into European Romanticism, the album takes a different direction compared to their previous work, Soft Sounds from Another Planet, which had a more sci-fi vibe. This new thematic approach seems to reflect a more personal and emotional journey for Zauner, who expressed feeling enticed by her artistic desires while also confronting the risks that come with them.
