News Summary

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando hosted its annual ‘6th and Jazz’ program from February 24-28, 2025, bringing the vibrant world of jazz music to over 15,000 students. This interactive educational experience engaged students in music-making activities, showcasing jazz history and its legends in an inspiring setting. The program emphasizes the importance of arts education in shaping creativity and cultural appreciation among young minds.

Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center Brings Jazz to Life for Local Students

Orlando recently lit up with the vibrant sounds of jazz as the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts hosted its annual 6th and Jazz educational program from February 24-28, 2025. This year’s installment of the program took place in the stunning Walt Disney Theater, where excitement filled the air as over 15,000 students from Orange County and Osceola County public schools participated in an experience designed to engage and inspire.

A Unique Learning Adventure

This year’s event was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Nolan Williams Jr. and NEWorks Productions. Together, they crafted a program that aimed to create a unique learning experience outside the traditional classroom. From the moment students stepped into the auditorium, they were encouraged to become part of the show rather than mere spectators. The 55-minute interactive performance was a highlight of the program, dazzling students with a focus on jazz history and its significant impact on modern music.

Engaging Young Minds Through Music

What made this program truly special was how it cultivated active participation among students. Rather than simply watching, these young learners were immersed in the action, engaging in music-making activities that included improvisation, audience interactions, dancing, and live performances of classic jazz compositions. The program brought to life the legacy of iconic jazz legends, introducing students to the rhythms and melodies of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dizzy Gillespie.

This hands-on approach not only entertained but also educated, fostering a deeper understanding of jazz and its rich history. Through the integration of educational techniques, students had a chance to explore jazz in a way that textbooks alone could never achieve.

A Legacy of Impact

This year’s 6th and Jazz program continued a tradition that has already reached over 220,000 students over the past nine years. With support from generous sponsors, including AdventHealth, Chick-Fil-A Greater Orlando Area, Experience Kissimmee, and Fifth Third Bank, the Dr. Phillips Center demonstrates its commitment to fostering a passion for the arts among young people.

The president and CEO of the Dr. Phillips Center emphasized the program’s success in inspiring youth and how it aligns with the center’s mission of providing “Arts For Every Life.” By opening the doors for students to experience the magic of live performance, this initiative nurtures creativity and cultural appreciation at a formative age.

A Community Hub for the Arts

The Dr. Phillips Center, a private nonprofit organization located in the heart of downtown Orlando, has made significant contributions since its grand opening in November 2014. Having produced and presented over 6,500 performances and events, it has welcomed more than 4.7 million guests through its doors, leaving a lasting imprint on the local cultural landscape.

As the applause faded and students left the theater, their faces beamed with excitement, and conversations buzzed with newfound knowledge and inspiration. The success of the 6th and Jazz program is a reminder of the vital role arts education plays in shaping the future of young minds, encouraging creativity, and celebrating the timeless allure of jazz music.

In a world where art can often take a backseat to traditional education, events like 6th and Jazz shine brightly, proving that learning and fun can go hand in hand. As Orlando continues to cultivate its vibrant arts scene, it’s clear that programs like this are essential in nurturing the next generation of artists, musicians, and creative thinkers.
