With a solid performance, including a 5-under 66, he edged out competitors in a thrilling finish. Closely trailing him was Bailo, while Jacobs and Haynes tied for third place. Orlando, the sunny city known for its theme parks and vibrant culture, recently turned its spotlight on the Orlando International Amateur, a premier golf event featuring players from around the globe. However, this year’s tournament faced some challenges, as inclement weather took center stage, causing a halt in play and preparing the stage for an unexpected turn of events.
As the second round of the tournament got underway, dark clouds rolled in and it wasn’t long before the skies opened up, forcing play to be suspended. Fortunately for the fans and players alike, the forecast looks promising, with play expected to resume bright and early on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. So mark your calendars, because anticipation is in the air! Rounds three tee times are set to unfold between 9:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. at the scenic El Campeon course.
Despite the turbulent weather, one golfer who is basking in victory is Jiang, who finished his second round just before the rain poured down. He dazzled the crowd with a stellar 5-under 66 at Los Colinas, showcasing his incredible skill on the course. Throughout this round, Jiang netted a remarkable six birdies while only recording one bogey.
Fast forward to the final round, and Jiang was determined to protect his lead. He showcased a mix of brilliance and resilience with five birdies and three bogeys. As the pressure built, especially after a bogey on No. 17 that cut his lead to just one shot, Jiang demonstrated his composure by sinking a crucial par on the challenging No. 18, securing his victory amidst the tension.
Following closely behind was the impressive Bailo, wrapping up his rounds with a commendable total score of 6-under par after cards of 70, 71, and 68. He made things all the more exciting by scoring birdies on holes No. 14 and 15, inching within that enticing one-shot difference from Jiang. Unfortunately for Bailo, the final three holes didn’t go his way, and he couldn’t manage to clinch the title.
In a tight contest for the podium, Stefan Jacobs and Palmer Haynes tied for third place, finishing at 4-under par. The excitement didn’t stop there, as Yuqi Liu concluded his rounds in solo fifth place at 2-under par. As for the field, eight golfers, including the exceptional Arkansas standout John Daly II, tied for sixth place, ending the day at 1-under, six shots behind Jiang.
The Orlando International Amateur is more than just a golf tournament; it has significant international roots. It was established by Maxence De Craecker from Belgium and Tiago Rodrigues from Portugal, who found their bond through their mutual love for golf. Interestingly, their family connection extends beyond just friendship, as they became brothers-in-law, drawing even deeper ties that resonate through the green.
The tournament was born from a vision to host more international events in Orlando, regarded as the unofficial golf capital of the world. De Craecker passionately emphasized the existing atmosphere, citing the PGA Show and various PGA Tour events as signs that Orlando needs and deserves major tournaments.
