The golfing community is abuzz with the news that Jon Rahm has officially slipped out of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), landing at a surprising No. 52. This drop marks a significant moment as it’s the first time since his stellar win at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open that Rahm finds himself outside of that elite bracket. It wasn’t long ago he was basking in the glory of being the world’s No. 1 golfer, a title he held for a total of 52 weeks after his dazzling performance back in 2017.
This fall in rankings doesn’t stem from a lack of talent or poor performances but rather from Rahm’s recent move to LIV Golf. Unfortunately for him, LIV Golf events do not award OWGR points due to a failure to meet OWGR criteria. This has led to a unique conundrum for Rahm, who despite playing well in LIV events, has seen his ranking suffer. In a nutshell, his impressive on-course abilities aren’t translating into ranking points, leaving many wondering how the system can be so unforgiving.
Interestingly, while his OWGR might not reflect it, Rahm is currently still holding strong at No. 4 according to DataGolf, right behind other big names like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele. This disparity highlights the ongoing debates in the golfing community about the fairness of ranking systems and how they sometimes fail to capture the true essence of a player’s performance.
He also gave a solid account of himself on the DP World Tour in the fall, managing three top-10 finishes, although the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January saw him miss the cut. Last season, while competing in LIV events, Rahm celebrated two wins, indicating that he still holds the magic touch on the greens.
However, the uncertainty surrounding LIV continues to loom large. LIV Golf’s previous CEO, Greg Norman, had sought OWGR points for their events but faced setbacks, causing frustration among many players, including Rahm, who believe LIV players absolutely deserve OWGR recognition.
With the USGA and R&A creating exemptions for LIV participants, there’s a glimmer of hope for Rahm and others, but it seems the path to OWGR points remains rocky. He has acknowledged the challenges that come with his choice to join LIV, subtly hinting at how it has impacted his ranking and opportunities.
As for Rahm, he seems to be focusing on building a competitive future within LIV Golf. He’s looking to assemble a strong, youthful team, hopeful for success and looking forward to playing a vital role in shaping the competitive scene of LIV Golf events.
