Mother Charged with Murder After Setting Children on Fire in Orlando Tragedy

Tragic Incident in Orlando: Mother Charged with Murder After Fire

Orlando, Florida — A 27-year-old woman, Esther Thelus, is now facing serious criminal charges after allegedly setting herself and her two children on fire, resulting in the tragic death of her infant son. This horrific incident has shocked the local community and raised many questions about what led to such a devastating act.

Who?

Esther Thelus is the primary person involved in this tragic case. She is a mother of two children aged 8 months and 2 years. The baby, Davinci Joseph, lost his life due to severe burns, while her 2-year-old son suffered only minor injuries.

What?

Thelus has been indicted on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and attempted first-degree premeditated murder. The grand jury’s indictment comes after an investigation into a horrifying event where it is alleged that Thelus soaked her children in gasoline before igniting herself and them, resulting in catastrophic injuries.

Where?

The heartbreaking incident took place on Hiawassee Oaks Drive in Orlando, Florida. Emergency responders were called to the neighborhood following reports of a fire, only to discover the three involved with severe burns.

When?

The event unfolded on August 26 when deputies received the emergency call around 6:30 p.m. Following the incident, Davinci, the baby, struggled for his life for nearly two months before ultimately succumbing to his injuries on October 25.

Why?

Details regarding the motive behind this tragic incident are still unclear. Investigators learned that earlier that day, Thelus had taken her 2-year-old son to see his father. Apparently, there were questions regarding the child’s paternity, causing stress and tension for Thelus. After leaving her children with their father’s family, she returned home where she eventually purchased a lighter and gasoline, leading to the subsequent fire.

Witnesses and documents indicate that Thelus’ roommate reported seeing her leave their home to purchase the incendiary materials shortly after dropping off her toddler. Shortly thereafter, as events transpired, the roommate’s daughter reported that she saw Thelus supposedly attempting to harm the children.

Upon discovery, the three individuals were immediately rushed to the hospital. Reports state that Thelus suffered extensive burns covering 50-60% of her body, while Davinci was severely burned, suffering 80-90% of his body burned. The 2-year-old son thankfully sustained only minor burns and has since made a full recovery.

Initially, authorities could not speak with Thelus due to her critical condition after being intubated and placed in intensive care. However, details from her roommate and surveillance footage helped investigators piece together what occurred on that fateful day.

Following Davinci’s death, investigators determined that there was probable cause to charge Thelus due to her actions leading to the boy’s death. On November 4, she was formally arrested for both murder and attempted murder.

This tragic case has left a community in mourning, seeking answers and understanding in the wake of such a devastating loss. Authorities continue their investigation as this deeply troubling situation unfolds, hoping to shed light on why such a tragedy occurred.
