Oklahoma City Rocks with Sooner Softball’s Big Win Over St. Thomas

Oklahoma City was buzzing on Thursday as the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners softball team took center stage at Love’s Field, where they absolutely dominated St. Thomas with a punchy 12-4 victory in just five innings. This game was a must-see, and even Mother Nature tried to rain on our parade by forcing a schedule change, moving the matchup up a day due to some expected stormy weather over the weekend.

A New Coaching Chapter for the Day

The Sooners played without their fearless leader, Head Coach Patty Gasso, who was busy being the keynote speaker at the Oklahoma Christian University Associates Gala. But fear not, our beloved assistant coach, JT Gasso, stepped in to lead the troops. It was JT’s first time coaching third base since he briefly filled in back on May 8, 2021, after Patty was ejected from a game. You could say he was more than ready to take the reins again!

Run, Sooner, Run! An Explosive Second Inning

As the game unfolded, it was clear that the Sooners were here for a good time—and to put some serious numbers on the scoreboard! The highlight of the night came during the second inning, where the Sooners powered through with an astonishing eight runs, sending an impressive 11 batters to the plate during the inning. It was a display of hitting that left the fans cheering for more!

Leading the charge was Cydney Sanders, who knocked not one, but two home runs in that second inning. With this feat, she became the first Sooner to hit two homers in a single inning since Alynah Torres accomplished the same back in 2022. Quite the record to break! Not to be outdone, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas chimed in with a two-run single that kept the momentum rolling, while Gabbie Garcia added an RBI double to her impressive day at bat, finishing the game with a stellar 3 for 3 performance and two runs scored. Talk about a powerhouse lineup!

Hitting It Out of the Park

The excitement didn’t stop there! In the fourth inning, Sydney Barker launched a three-run homer, increasing the lead to 11-1, and putting the Sooners in an impressive position. Freshman Corri Hicks also got in on the action, sending her second home run of the week sailing over the left-field fence. The look on the players’ faces as they rounded the bases showed just how much they were enjoying the game.

Closing Out the Game

While St. Thomas made a last-ditch effort to battle back and managed to score two runs in the final inning, the Sooners held strong. They proved that their lead was simply too great to overcome, sealing the victory decisively. With this stellar win, Oklahoma’s record improved to 33-3, while St. Thomas sunk to 19-12.

What’s Next for the Sooners?

After an exhilarating win, the Oklahoma Sooners have their sights set on their next challenge. They are set to face off against UCF in a doubleheader on both Friday and Saturday. If Thursday’s game is anything to go by, it’s sure to be another thrilling experience for fans and players alike!

As the Oklahoma City community shows its support for the Sooners, the energy around the team continues to bubble with excitement. Here’s looking forward to more fantastic games ahead!
