Sponsor Our ArticlesThe recent municipal elections in Orange County saw a strong voter turnout, with reports indicating some serious voting mishaps. A grand jury investigation revealed irregularities with absentee ballots in the Village of Tuxedo, leading to recommendations for improved election practices. Incumbent commissioners kept their seats, and a significant $300 million education bond referendum passed, highlighting the community’s commitment to enhancing local schools and infrastructure.
Hey there, Orange County residents! If you live in the lovely cities of Belle Isle, Ocoee, Maitland, Windermere, or Winter Park, you might have joined in on a wave of voting action recently. This past Tuesday, these cities held their municipal elections, and turnout was buzzing as polling places closed down at 7 p.m. Ready to dive into what went down?
While the excitement of election day was in the air, not all news from the voting front was cheerful. A report from an Orange County grand jury poured over some serious issues with absentee ballots in the Village of Tuxedo. On investigation, the jury found that 14 unregistered individuals had managed to improperly request, receive, and cast absentee ballots during the village’s 2023 elections. That’s definitely not how voting is supposed to work!
Additionally, another 16 individuals requested and received absentee ballots while still needing to register before the ballot counting began. It was noted that the village clerk had to seek guidance multiple times from the county board of elections on how to run elections properly. Seems like there’s some room for improvement, don’t you think?
To help clean up the voting process, the grand jury had some recommendations. They suggested that all villages think about moving the responsibility of election administration to the county board of elections. One big idea is for Tuxedo to shift its election date from June—when it’s currently held—to November, the general election month. This could potentially boost voter turnout and streamline the process. If village clerks continue managing elections, they should definitely get some proper training from the county board.
On top of those suggestions, there are some neat ideas on how to handle information regarding absentee ballots. For instance, village clerks should only share details when someone requests it under the Freedom of Information Law. Plus, any materials given to one candidate should also be available to their opponents. Talk about keeping things fair!
Now, back to the results! In Orange County, voters participated in a presidential election that included amazing state and local races. Polling sites were buzzing from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m., keeping spirits high as residents cast their votes. If you want to check your voting district, you can easily do that at voterlookup.elections.ny.gov.
In terms of local leadership, incumbent Democratic county commissioners held onto their positions without a hitch. Phyllis Portie-Ascott, a Democrat, marked a big win by grabbing about 74% of the votes against her Republican opponent, H. Nathan Robinson. What a way to solidify her first full term!
In highly engaging news, the $300 million education bond referendum was hugely successful, passing with roughly 67% approval. This significant fund will allocate $175 million to Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and $125 million to Orange County Schools for essential facility improvements. The focus is on enhancing educational environments, and this could mean big changes.
Chapel Hill also had good news to share as voters greenlit $44 million for various infrastructure and equity projects that include affordable housing and upgrades to public facilities. Sounds like the community is stepping up for progress!
Finally, Cristóbal Palmer took a special election victory for Carrboro Town Council with roughly 77% of the vote, ensuring the town has a strong voice. Together, these victories and findings highlight an active and engaged voter base in Orange County.
So, whether you turned out to vote or followed along from home, there’s plenty happening right here in Orange County. As we look ahead, it’s all about continually improving our voting processes and supporting our local leaders. Happy voting, everyone!
