Orlando Welcomes a Stunning Art Exhibit at Leu Gardens

Art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike will be thrilled to know that Orlando has a fantastic new attraction for the summer! Leu Gardens is currently hosting an outdoor art exhibit titled “Origami in the Garden,” showcasing a marvelous collection of sculptures inspired by the ancient Japanese art of origami.

Explore 50 Acres of Creativity

This vibrant exhibit features a total of 13 unique sculpture stops scattered throughout the botanical garden’s sprawling 50-acre landscape. It is a feast for the eyes and a delightful blend of art and nature, for all ages to enjoy. The exhibition will be open until early September, offering plenty of time for visitors to wander and soak in the beauty from all angles.

Inspire Your Imagination

The goal of this showcase is to inspire guests and provide them with a fresh perspective on the gardens. By integrating art into this natural setting, visitors can expect a creative spark as they explore the various art installations. The exhibit beautifully highlights how artistic interpretations can enhance horticultural displays.

Meet the Artists Behind the Magic

The sculptures on display are the combined talents of artists Jennifer and Kevin Box from Santa Fe, known for their impressive origami-inspired designs. They were first exhibited back in 2013 and have since been embraced by the community. With assistance from several skilled artists specializing in origami, these sculptures have come to life in durable materials such as aluminum, bronze, and steel.

From Paper to Sculpture

Among the lovely creations are various delicate forms resembling paper cranes, horses, planes, birds, a playful squirrel, and much more. Visitors should particularly seek out the standout piece, titled “Flying Folds.” This remarkable sculpture was inspired by origami artist Robert J. Lang’s work and went through a complex development phase involving 35 steps over 12 weeks using a lost wax casting technique.

A Lesson in Life Through Origami

Kevin Box expresses that the art of origami—beginning with just a single uncut square of paper—serves as a metaphor for life itself. This deeper connection to the art form adds an intriguing layer to the experience as guests walk among these breathtaking sculptures.

Learn More as You Wander

To enhance your visit, there are informational plaques placed near each sculpture, along with a narrated audio tour accessible through QR codes or a phone number posted close by. This way, guests can dive deeper into the story and inspiration behind each magnificent creation, providing an educational twist to their outing.

An Escape into Nature

Jennifer D’hollander, the executive director of Leu Gardens, emphasizes the importance of nature in our lives and how gardens provide a much-needed mental break from daily stress. This exhibit not only connects art and horticulture but also enhances visitor experience in the great outdoors.

Connection to the Community

The exhibit features a charming pegasus sculpture that ties in with the University of Central Florida, strengthening the local connection with the art. Guests are encouraged to admire the intricate details of the sculptures, yet reminded to refrain from climbing on them.

Inside Out at the Welcome Center

Meanwhile, an exciting “Inside Out” display in the welcome center showcases both small folded paper works and larger-scale versions, offering an even more comprehensive view of origami as it relates to our world.

Getting Involved and Future Plans

Leu Gardens is constantly looking for ways to engage the community. Plans for upcoming public meetings will discuss improvements within the garden, which might include a much-anticipated children’s garden and parking upgrades. They also host initiatives like dog days, additional member hours, and free field trips for students, making it a hub of activity.

If you’re ready to experience this wonderful exhibition for yourself, you can find Leu Gardens at 1920 N.
