The City of Orlando is inviting local artists to showcase their work in the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall as part of the celebrations for Black History Month. This initiative emphasizes the importance of art in portraying Black heritage and culture while providing a platform for artistic expression that reflects African American history.
The city aims to highlight the 2025 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” which delves into the significant contributions of Black individuals in various aspects of work. This theme underscores how Black labor has not only shaped physical environments and propelled industries but has also been instrumental in building communities, supporting social justice movements, and nurturing the creative expressions that form the essence of Black culture.
Local artists are encouraged to submit original 2D or 3D artworks that illustrate the diversity of Black labor. The submission is open to all artists, and the city particularly welcomes innovative interpretations that capture the theme’s depth.
Artists can submit their artwork via email to the Office of Public Art at flynn.dobbs@orlando.gov. The deadline for submissions is set for December 19, 2024. Those selected for the exhibition will be notified by December 23, 2024.
Selected artworks must be delivered to the Terrace Gallery by January 28, 2025, ensuring they are in place for the month-long celebration.
This initiative is crucial as it not only honors the historical contributions of Black Americans but also encourages community engagement through the arts. By showcasing these artistic interpretations, the city aims to foster a greater understanding of the struggles and achievements of African Americans in the workforce, thus enriching public discourse around Black history.
For more details regarding the Black History Month Call for Artists, interested individuals can refer to the Orlando City Hall’s official communications or their respective platforms. This is an opportunity for artists to make their voices heard and contribute to a significant narrative.
As the city embarks on this cultural journey, it encourages local artists to step forward and take part in a celebration that honors the past while looking forward to a more inclusive future.
