This month promises fun, learning, and celebration!
The standout event of the month is undoubtedly the Orlando Book Festival, happening on May 17 at the Orlando Public Library. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., literary enthusiasts can enjoy a lineup of exciting activities. The festival features a keynote address from New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer, renowned for his thought-provoking storytelling. May is not just about books; it’s also Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. OCLS has lined up a fantastic array of events to honor this vibrant heritage. On May 13, join a virtual class focusing on the fundamentals of Chinese painting at 6:30 p.m. Then, don’t miss the engaging Polynesian dance performance set for May 31 at 11 a.m. at the Chickasaw branch. It’s an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in rich cultural traditions.
This weekend, fans can celebrate the galaxy far, far away with themed events! On May 3, little padawans can craft their very own Star Wars collaged buttons and bookmarks at the Alafaya branch at 11 a.m. Then on May 4—affectionately known as National Star Wars Day—adults can partake in the Star Wars Intergalactic Celebration starting at 3:30 p.m. Costumes are highly encouraged, so dust off that lightsaber and join the fun!
May is also recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, and OCLS is committed to fostering wellness with a range of activities. There’s a virtual session on Yoga for Anxiety on May 8 at 7 p.m. that could help ease your mind and body. Additionally, if you want to dive deeper, Improving Your Mental Health is a virtual event scheduled for May 28, focusing on the crucial link between mental and physical health.
OCLS will host a number of engaging workshops this month, perfect for adults and families alike. From Fiber Arts Meetup gatherings every Tuesday from May 6-27 at 4:30 p.m. to a Therapeutic Pottery Program on May 14 at 11 a.m., there’s plenty of creativity to explore. Want to get moving? Don’t miss Qigong Movement and Breathing classes set for May 16 and 23!
The little ones can join in on the fun too! Kids aged 3-5 can shake their groove thing at the “Dance Party: Moana Moves” on May 2 at 11 a.m. for some interactive dancing.
