"Orlando Indie Band Debut Album Release: The Sourdrops"
Orlando is buzzing with excitement as local indie band The Sourdrops prepares to launch their debut full-length album, Oh So Sour, on Friday, November 29, 2024. This release comes on the heels of their previous project, The Most Beautiful Demos, which showcased their lo-fi sound and infectious energy. The band’s unique style draws inspiration from classic indie pop, echoing the sounds of influential groups from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The Sourdrops are a five-member ensemble comprised of Matty Begnaud (guitar, vocals), Kate Begnaud (tambourine, vocals), Shad Perez (guitar), KC Lace (bass), and Willie Bess (stand-up drums). Their formation in 2023 was driven by a shared desire to create pop music that combines a sense of fun with nostalgic elements reminiscent of the C86 movement, an iconic compilation of indie pop from the UK.
Oh So Sour features eight new songs along with an intro, marking the first time fans will hear Kate’s vocals prominent in the mix. The band recorded most of the album in a travel trailer, which allowed them to maintain their lo-fi charm while also introducing a more polished sound. Their music embodies the spirit of classic indie pop, reflecting influences from groups such as The Pastels, Tiger Trap, and My Bloody Valentine.
To celebrate the release of their album, The Sourdrops will perform at Uncle Lou’s Entertainment Hall in Orlando on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Their concert will feature a lineup of local bands, including Rosary, Curleys, The Ashies, Stiff Bitches, and Pamper, showcasing the vibrant music scene Florida has to offer. This event is expected to draw attention from music lovers eager to experience the fresh sounds of the local indie scene.
The Sourdrops are motivated by a desire to capture the joy and raw energy of indie pop from a bygone era. Their formation was influenced by a shared passion for creating music that is unpolished and authentic. The band members emphasize collaboration in their songwriting process, contributing various ideas to craft their songs together. In their view, “making music should be fun and a little messy,” reflecting their commitment to an organic sound.
As they embark on this busy weekend of album release and performances, The Sourdrops are excited to connect with fans and fellow musicians. They hope to foster a creative community that embraces both punk and twee influences, enhancing Orlando’s reputation as a hub for unique musical talent. Their upcoming shows signify not only a personal milestone for the band but also a celebration of the rich musical landscape in Orlando.
Overall, The Sourdrops are a band to watch in the indie scene, blending nostalgia with a contemporary twist, inviting audiences to experience their creative journey.
