Investigators found that he failed to check in for 38 out of the 40 jobs claimed. This shocking scandal raises serious concerns about oversight within the department, especially as it follows the arrest of another officer for similar misconduct. OPD is now taking steps to enhance monitoring of extra-duty assignments as public trust hangs in the balance.
In a shocking turn of events, an Orlando police officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Officer Oscar Polanco was arrested recently amid serious allegations of fraud and grand theft. The accusations revolve around claims that he pocketed over $14,000 by falsely claiming payment for extra-duty assignments that he allegedly never performed.
Investigators have unveiled a dubious trail of deceit stretching from May 17 to July 21, 2024, during which Polanco reportedly claimed payment for a whopping 40 extra-duty jobs. But the catch? The evidence suggests that he might not have actually completed any of these assignments. This is not just a minor oversight; it raises significant concerns about how such allegations managed to slip through the cracks.
According to the findings, Polanco failed to check in and out at police headquarters for 38 out of the 40 claimed jobs. That’s right—he didn’t log into his police computer for any of these extra-duty assignments either. And it doesn’t end there; he also neglected to activate his police radio or body camera during the supposed shifts, remarkable lapses for any police officer.
The investigation painted a picture of a carefully orchestrated scheme where Polanco used advanced methods to exploit the very fabric of unsupervised extra-duty assignments. By leveraging the RollKall application to mask his attendance, he cleverly navigated around Orlando Police Department’s (OPD) communication protocols, making it difficult for anyone to detect his fraudulent actions.
In light of these allegations, OPD leadership has been put on notice. They have confirmed that they are currently investigating a total of three officers connected to questionable time sheets. Polanco’s case reflects a troubling trend within the department, as he is now the second officer to be arrested in recent months.
Already in the spotlight for similar issues is retired officer Mathew Fleury, who was charged after it was revealed he failed to show up for several claimed shifts. His activities were eventually traced back to his home through GPS records, exposing another glaring failure in protocols. Fleury had claimed to work 68 extra-duty shifts, earning over $12,000 during this time.
As the dust settles on this unfolding scandal, the OPD is taking steps to ensure that such fraudulent activities are not repeated in the future. The department has implemented new tracking technology to bolster the oversight of extra-duty assignments, aiming to tighten the reins on how time is managed and reported.
The potential fallout from these investigations is significant. The criminal cases against Polanco and the other implicated officer are now in the hands of State Attorney Monique Worrell’s team, who will be reviewing the evidence. Meanwhile, the third officer, still in active duty, has been relieved of their responsibilities while the inquiry continues.
This scandal hits at the heart of public trust in law enforcement. When officers who are meant to serve and protect engage in fraudulent behavior, it shakes the very foundation of community confidence. Orlando residents are undoubtedly watching closely as these cases develop, hoping for accountability and transparency from their police department.
As more details emerge, the focus remains on how to restore faith in the system while ensuring that those who misuse their authority face appropriate consequences. The community deserves a police force they can trust, and ongoing efforts appear to be aimed at making sure of just that.
