Orlando Film Students Make Semifinals in Coca-Cola Refreshing Films Program

Orlando, FL – A pair of currently anonymous film students from the University of Central Florida (UCF) have made significant strides in this year’s Coca-Cola Refreshing Films program. Competing against over 700 applicants from 62 universities in the United States and Canada, these UCF students have reached the semifinals of the competition.

The Competition Overview

The Coca-Cola Refreshing Films program, which has been an annual event since 1998, is designed to provide aspiring filmmakers with the chance to work on professional film sets with large budgets. The goal is to create engaging advertising content for Coca-Cola, giving students both valuable experience and exposure. According to program manager Katie Pryor, “Brands always need content, and students always need opportunities. This program was designed to be a happy marriage of both, allowing students to create content for a big brand.”

Making a Mark with “I Got This One”

Among the 53 submissions from UCF, the team’s script titled “I Got This One” has captured attention. Senior film major Brandon Peebles, who partnered with classmate Noah Okojie, was inspired to create a story based on his experiences growing up watching movies with his father. “This would be one of the best projects in my whole portfolio,” Peebles said. He recalls that his father ignited his passion for film, stating, “He’s the reason I’ve seen so many great movies and the reason I’m at UCF for film.”

Recent Developments and Next Steps

Having successfully reached the semifinals, Peebles and Okojie are now tasked with refining their script and developing additional materials. A panel of judges will review submitted proposals and pick four teams as finalists. Each of these finalists will receive a budget of $20,000 to produce a 50-second ad spot. The winning team, chosen by industry professionals, will take home the Red Ribbon Panel Grand Prize and their film will be screened at Coca-Cola-partnered theaters across the U.S. and Canada, including popular AMC Theaters.

UCF’s Historical Context in the Program

While UCF has participated in the Coca-Cola Refreshing Films program for four years, this is their first time reaching the semifinals. However, UCF has yet to advance to the finals despite three teams previously being labeled as semifinalists. This year, the identities of the semifinalists remain confidential until the final four are announced.

Once finalized, the names of the finalists will be posted on the program’s official website and social media pages. UCF’s community eagerly anticipates this announcement, hoping for further recognition in this competitive landscape.
