"Orlando Urban Park Project Revitalizes Downtown Under I-4"

Orlando to Transform Under Interstate 4 with New Urban Park

The city of Orlando is set to embark on an exciting project that aims to transform an underutilized area beneath Interstate 4 into a vibrant urban gathering space. This initiative, previously known as the Under-i Park, will cover ten acres of land that have primarily gone unused for years, providing paths for walking, sitting areas, and a more inviting atmosphere for both residents and visitors.

Who is Involved?

The City of Orlando is spearheading this project and is currently seeking proposals from contractors to manage the construction. A request for proposals, due by January 30, indicates that the project will be handled by a contractor who can work within the estimated budget of $40 million. City spokeswoman Andrea Otero has commented on the benefits of the additional space, particularly during busy downtown events.

What Will the Project Include?

The proposed urban gathering space will feature 150 temporary public parking spots, addressing the growing problem of traffic congestion during events within the city’s entertainment district. Additionally, a one-year pilot program for rideshare drop-off and pick-up will commence on December 20. This is a strategic move to enhance pedestrian safety as over 15,000 guests navigate the area before and after local happenings.

Where is It Located?

Situated under Interstate 4, the park will span from near Washington Street to Church Street. Planning documents suggest that future improvements could extend to additional streets that pass beneath the interstate, including South Street, Robinson Street, Livingston Street, Amelia Street, and Colonial Drive.

When Will Construction Begin?

Construction on this innovative park is set to commence in early 2025, with an expected duration of two years. As plans progress, city officials anticipate the construction will significantly reshape the atmosphere of downtown Orlando, making it more pedestrian-friendly and lively.

Why is This Project Important?

According to Jeré Matheny, a vice president at a local property group, the establishment of The Canopy will act as a crucial link between the east and west sides of downtown Orlando. He remarked on the current lack of incentives for walking across the interstate, noting how this new space could boost foot traffic and encourage residents and visitors alike to explore local businesses while traveling between destinations.

Matheny also highlighted the project’s potential benefits for property owners in the area. As new developments come to completion, such as the Westcourt development—which is expected to introduce over 900,000 square feet of mixed-use space—having a vibrant park space like The Canopy could make downtown a more attractive place for businesses and tenants.

In summary, the City of Orlando’s initiative to create this urban gathering space beneath Interstate 4 represents a significant step towards revitalizing an underused area of the city. With construction set to start in 2025, residents can look forward to a welcoming environment that enhances safety, boosts business, and promotes community engagement.
