What’s Happening in Florida?
This week, Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection announced an exciting “Great Outdoors Initiative”. The plan is to boost public access to state parks, which means more outdoor activities for everyone! We’re talking about everything from camping and cabins to — you guessed it — pickleball courts!
This new initiative aims to not only enhance the number of recreation options available at Florida’s state parks but also to solidify the state’s commitment to conserving nature, boosting the outdoor recreation economy, and ensuring a high quality of life for all Floridians.
All About Pickleball Day
And if you didn’t know, August 8th is National Pickleball Day! It’s a perfect time to get out there, grab a paddle, and see what all the fuss is about. If you’re curious, Dave Vanz, the founder of TheOrlandoLife.com, has been leading the charge as the admin of the Central Florida Pickleball Facebook group since 2016. He recently appeared on FOX Orlando Live to discuss how he’s witnessed the sport skyrocket in popularity. It’s truly amazing how quickly pickleball is becoming a household name!
Controversy Over State Parks
While the idea of more pickleball courts sounds fantastic to many, not everyone is on board with the proposed expansions at state parks. Julie Wraithmell, the Executive Director of Audubon Florida, expressed her concerns, stating that golf courses and pickleball courts could ruin the parks’ natural beauty. She said, “Golf courses at treasures like Jonathon Dickinson and pickleball courts at Honeymoon Island would be travesties.” This sentiment is echoed by the Florida Springs Council, who worries about the commercialization of public lands.
Interestingly, there has been a history of golf course proposals in state parks. Back in 2011, a bill was introduced to allow famed golfer Jack Nicklaus to build one at Jonathan Dickinson. However, after listening to residents’ feedback, the proposal was retracted. It seems Floridians have strong opinions about how to balance recreation and conservation!
State Parks Attract 30 Million Visitors
Now, for some impressive stats! During the 2022-2023 fiscal year, Florida’s stunning state parks drew in nearly 30 million visitors. According to the Florida Sports Foundation, the state is home to over 1,100 golf courses, with many out-of-state visitors flocking to experience the greens. In fact, about one-third of the almost 48 million annual rounds played come from visitors outside Florida!
But let’s get back to pickleball! The website Pickleheads reports that there are now over 1,160 pickleball locations across Florida, more than anywhere else in the nation! Cities like Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando are leading the charge with the most courts available.
A Bright Future for Florida’s Outdoors
As the state continues to aim for inclusivity in outdoor recreation, plans to create the Florida Wildlife Corridor are also in motion. This ambitious project intends to include nearly 18 million acres of vital habitats, linking the Everglades to the Panhandle while already boasting more than 6,000 acres of recreational trails.
