This win places him at No. 7 in the world rankings and secures him a $4 million prize. Henley overcame a challenging start and a close competition with Collin Morikawa, showcasing his determination and skill as he rallied in the final holes. The tournament, held at the prestigious Bay Hill Club & Lodge, attracted top talent and celebrated the legacy of Arnold Palmer.
In a breathtaking finale at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Russell Henley emerged victorious, rallying for a spectacular win on Sunday with a final score of 2-under 70. This triumph marks a significant milestone in Henley’s career as it is his biggest victory to date, elevating him to No. 7 in the world rankings.
The tournament saw Henley trailing Collin Morikawa by three shots as they approached the final five holes. However, the tides turned at the pivotal par-3 14th hole when Morikawa missed the green and scored a bogey. Seizing the opportunity, Henley made a birdie on the same hole, closing the gap to just one shot.
It was at the par-5 16th hole where the excitement peaked. Henley executed a remarkable chip-in for eagle from over 50 feet, snatching the lead for the first time in the final round. Meanwhile, Morikawa missed his chance for a birdie, and Henley’s leg-up left spectators on the edges of their seats.
With only two holes left to play, Henley managed to finish his round with a pair of pars, sealing the deal on his emphatic victory. Morikawa, who ended the day with a score of 72, couldn’t bounce back from the late developments that disrupted his lead.
Prior to those thrilling moments, Henley had a rocky start, battling through two bogeys on the front nine, with one bogey coming from the fairway at the start of the back nine. Regardless of those challenges, his sheer determination propelled him to success.
Henley’s triumph grants him a whopping $4 million from the tournament’s generous total purse of $20 million. This victory not only serves as a financial boon but also signifies a notable improvement in Henley’s game over the last three years, showcasing his hard work and perseverance.
In addition to Henley’s excitement, Core Conners also made headlines by finishing tied for second place with a score of 71, earning himself a coveted spot in The Open Championship this summer at Royal Portrush. Meanwhile, Keegan Bradley made an impressive splash in the tournament by setting a record with a stunning 29 on the front nine, although he ultimately finished tied for fifth with a total score of 64.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler concluded the tournament with a score of 70, finishing tied for 11th. His performance may spark reflections on his past triumph but couldn’t replicate the same magic at Bay Hill this year.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational, renowned as one of the most prestigious non-major tournaments on the PGA Tour, takes place at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida.
