The diverse categories highlight the astonishing talent and creativity present in photography today. An exciting gala ceremony will take place in London on April 16, 2025, where the Photographer of the Year will be announced, along with cash prizes and a solo exhibition opportunity. The shortlisted works will be exhibited from April 17 to May 5, 2025, at Somerset House, celebrating important narratives and social challenges through photography.
It’s that time of year again! The Sony World Photography Awards 2025 have officially announced their finalists for this year’s Professional competition, and the excitement is palpable. With more than 419,000 entries submitted from talented photographers around the globe, this year’s competition is fiercely represented!
In its 18th year, the awards continue to shine a spotlight on outstanding photographic projects that tell meaningful stories shaping our world today. The panel of judges sifted through an incredible range of submissions from which they selected three finalists and up to seven shortlisted photographers in each category. Talk about some serious talent!
The categories this year cover a broad spectrum that includes wildlife and nature, landscape, still life, sport, architecture & design, creative, the environment, documentary projects, perspectives, and portraiture. It’s an amazing showcase of what photographers can do.
Monica Allende, the chair of the jury, noted how richly diverse the selected works are. The finalists’ photographs explore a variety of themes including community, memory, and the many social challenges we face today—each picture telling its own story that resonates with viewers on a deeper level.
Mark your calendars: the coveted title of Photographer of the Year will be announced at an exciting gala ceremony in London on April 16, 2025. The lucky winner will not only take home a glorious $25,000 cash prize but also a shiny piece of Sony digital imaging equipment. Plus, they’ll get a fantastic opportunity for a solo exhibition presentation at the upcoming Sony World Photography Awards London exhibition next year. Now, that’s a prize worth fighting for!
But that’s not all! Starting from April 17 until May 5, 2025, the shortlisted and finalist works will be showcased at the stunning Somerset House. After that, the exhibition will travel to various other locations, giving even more people a chance to experience these breathtaking images.
Among the array of fascinating projects showcased this year are some extraordinary stories that touch on vital issues. For instance, High Altitude Golf features Martha and Teresa from Bolivia, capturing their unique experience golfing at one of the highest courses in the world. Another entry, Shred the Patriarchy, tells the empowering story of female skaters in India breaking societal norms.
Then there’s The Chad Olympic Team that inspires with the journey of four Chadian girls who earned scholarships to train for the Paris 2024 Olympics, while The Journey Home brings to light the dangerous conditions faced by youth in Cape Town. Other remarkable projects encompass the plight of Indigenous communities in places like Yvy-Mara Ey in Argentina, which stresses their deep connection to their land, and the stunning documentary Memories of Dust that re-examines traditional masculinity through cowboy culture.
Would you believe that many entries even focus on environmental issues? For example, Winter Mummy looks at musk oxen in Norway, while Nowhere to Go tackles the consequences of climate change on polar bears in Canada.
The Sony World Photography Awards is produced by the World Photography Organisation, which is dedicated to uplifting both established and emerging artists through a range of competitions. This includes the Open competition, Student and Youth competition, as well as the National and Regional Awards—making it a great platform for photographers to showcase their work.
