In a somber turn of events, Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) has died after succumbing to injuries suffered in a traffic incident. This accident, which occurred on November 21, also resulted in the deaths of two other deputies, Corporal Luis Paez and Deputy Sheriff Butch Waller.
Deputy Diaz was a dedicated member of the PBSO motor unit for over ten years. He, along with Cpl. Paez and D/S Waller, were engaged in routine traffic enforcement on Southern Boulevard when tragedy struck. The three law enforcement officers were responding to an issue with Diaz’s motorcycle when they were struck by a vehicle.
The horrific accident took place at approximately 9:29 a.m. on November 21, near State Road 80, west of Seminole Pratt Whitney Boulevard. The deputies had pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway when a car, swerving to avoid another vehicle, collided with them. The impact sent all three officers airborne.
The incident occurred on Southern Boulevard, a busy highway that runs through Palm Beach County, where traffic enforcement is routinely conducted by local law enforcement.
The initial crash took place on November 21, 2023. Following the incident, both Cpl. Paez and D/S Waller were pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Diaz was transported to a local hospital, where he fought for his life until he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on November 25, just four days later.
This incident highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily while performing their duties. The PBSO mourns the loss of Deputy Diaz and recognizes the valor displayed by all three officers who were committed to serving and protecting the community.
In an official statement, the sheriff’s office remarked, “Despite his courageous fight, Deputy Diaz lost the battle due to the injuries sustained by the tragic crash that also claimed the lives of Cpl. Paez and D/S Waller.” The statement conveyed deep condolences to the families and colleagues of the fallen officers, emphasizing the profound grief felt throughout the community.
Ayerim Lopez, a cousin of Deputy Diaz, expressed the overwhelming pain and shock the family is experiencing. “It’s just a feeling of numbness and heartache,” she stated, reflecting the emotional strain caused by the loss.
The PBSO is receiving support from the community as mourners prepare to say their final goodbyes. A memorial service is planned for December 3, as the sheriff’s office continues to grieve the tragic loss of three dedicated law enforcement officers. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis publicly expressed his condolences on social media, reinforcing the sentiment of loss felt statewide.
The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. As of now, no criminal charges have been filed against the driver involved, who is cooperating with authorities. Preliminary findings suggest the driver did not appear impaired at the time of the incident.
This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those in law enforcement. Palm Beach County residents are left to mourn the losses of Deputy Diaz, Cpl. Paez, and D/S Waller, honoring their memory and legacy of service.
