On the evening of January 29, 2025, a catastrophic midair collision occurred involving a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jetliner flying as American Eagle Flight No. 5342 and a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter. This harrowing incident, which took place near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., around 9 PM ET, ultimately claimed the lives of all 67 individuals on board the two aircraft.
At the time of the crash, American Eagle Flight No. 5342 was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the Black Hawk helicopter was conducting a training flight with three soldiers from the Army’s B Company, 12th Aviation Battalion, based out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Unfortunately, both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River, making recovery efforts especially challenging due to the cold and windy weather.
As of February 4, search and recovery teams have successfully retrieved the remains of all victims. Preliminary findings suggest that the Black Hawk helicopter was operating almost 200 feet higher than it should have been during the time of the midair collision. Compounding the stress of the situation was the fact that there was only one air traffic control worker managing multiple aircraft at the time, as opposed to the usual two. This particular detail has raised eyebrows and will certainly be investigated further by the NTSB.
Tragically, the victims included an assortment of individuals from various backgrounds. Among them were six members associated with the Skating Club of Boston, who were returning from the National Development Camp after participating in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Notable casualties included teenage skaters Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, as well as their mothers and coaches. The impact of this loss resonates deeply within the figure skating community.
Additionally, Asra Hussain Raza, a 26-year-old consultant traveling home from a work trip, was also lost in this tragic event. Furthermore, four members of a Maryland-based labor union were on board, along with the helicopter’s crew chief, 29-year-old Ryan O’Hara, who also lost his life in the crash.
