News Summary

In a thrilling game on Sunday, UCF baseball suffered a 5-3 loss against Bryant University but triumphed in the series overall, winning two out of three games. Coach Rich Wallace expressed concerns over offensive struggles early in the match, but the Knights managed to rally and narrow the score before falling short in the final innings. Despite the loss, UCF showcased strong elements of their game, improving their season record to 6-1. Looking forward, they are set to face Florida Atlantic in their next matchup.

UCF Baseball Takes a Tough Loss Against Bryant, Yet Wins the Series

In a spirited clash on Sunday in Orlando, UCF baseball faced off against the Bulldogs from Bryant University, resulting in a 5-3 loss. It was the series finale, but despite the setback, the Knights came away with a series victory, having won two out of three games against the Bulldogs. With this weekend’s results, the Knights improved their record to an impressive 6-1 for the season.

Offensive Struggles in the Early Innings

UCF’s head coach, Rich Wallace, expressed some concerns regarding the team’s offensive execution, especially during the first four innings. The Knights struggled to find their rhythm at the plate, allowing Bryant to build an early lead. The Bulldogs struck first, scoring a run in the second inning followed by another in the third, leaving UCF trailing 2-0.

In the fourth inning, UCF’s pitcher Grant Siegel showcased his skills as he retired the Bulldogs in order, providing a glimpse of hope for the Knights. However, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning thanks to a crafty squeeze bunt, catching UCF off guard.

Knights Fight Back

UCF finally found some momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning. They scored two pivotal runs, narrowing the Bulldogs’ lead to just one run. Chase Krewson ignited the offense with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then crossed home plate on an RBI single from Antonio Jimenez. The Knights loaded the bases next due to a balk by Bryant’s pitcher Jared Burrows, allowing Jimenez to also score.

Challenges Continue in Late Innings

Despite the momentum, Bryant added another unearned run in the seventh and pushed their lead to 5-2 in the eighth inning. UCF wasn’t ready to give up just yet though. With two outs in the eighth, Lex Boedicker hit a significant infield hit, followed by Edian Espinal’s single, and then Andrew Sundean delivered a clutch two-out RBI single, bringing the score to 5-3. Krewson stepped up again, making a solid hit, but unfortunately, the Bulldogs’ shortstop snagged it to end the inning.

Final Showdown

As the ninth inning rolled around, UCF’s reliever Isaac Williams held the Bulldogs scoreless, providing a glimmer of hope. The Knights looked to rally but faced a tough challenge as Bryant’s Liam Chamberlain efficiently retired them in order for his first save of the year. Krewson was the standout performer for the Knights with a solid 2-for-3 performance, scoring one run. Both Jimenez and Sundean contributed with their own hits and an RBI each, highlighting a strong effort from the team.

Looking Ahead

As the dust settles on this matchup, it’s worth noting that UCF’s bullpen performed admirably, allowing only one earned run over the last 4.2 innings. On the other side of the field, the Bulldogs were tipped to be strong contenders this season, having previously reached the NCAA Raleigh Regional in 2024. UCF’s Siegel, facing his first loss of the season, now stands at 1-1, while Bryant’s Brooks Ey picked up a win in relief, improving his record to 1-0.

Next up, UCF will wrap up their eight-game homestand with a matchup against Florida Atlantic on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Following this, the Knights will gear up for a three-game series against rivals South Florida in Tampa! This season is shaping up to be exciting, and fans are eager to see how the Knights bounce back!
