In a dazzling display of speed and agility, the UCF women’s track and field team truly shone at the Orange and Purple Invitational this past weekend. Held in the vibrant atmosphere of Clemson, South Carolina, the Knights walked away with numerous accolades and plenty of pride!
Let’s dive right into the action, shall we? The star of the show was none other than senior Kiah Williams, who conquered the 400-meter run. Striding off the track with a gleaming first-place finish, Kiah recorded an impressive personal best time of 52.69 seconds. That’s a whopping 0.46 seconds ahead of the next competitor! Talk about running with purpose!
But Kiah wasn’t alone in her celebration! On Saturday, senior Natalia Madison soared to a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing an impressive height of 1.63 meters. Meanwhile, in the thrilling world of the triple jump, senior Asherah Collins secured second place with a leap of 13.16 meters. The energy was palpable as each athlete gave their all!
Friday was packed with intense competition. Senior I’Asia Wilson showcased her power in the 60-meter dash, finishing third in the finals after a solid performance throughout the heats. Teammate fifth-year Adaobi Tabugbo also turned heads by winning her heat in the preliminaries, later taking fourth in the finals after an impressive semifinal effort where she placed second.
Not to be outdone, junior Twaneise Johnson and sophomore Janiah Pulliam brought their A-game to the 400-meter, finishing eighth and twelfth respectively after winning their heats with style!
Saturday turned out to be relay race day! The UCF A team, featuring Williams, Johnson, junior Jazmen Newberry, and redshirt sophomore Deja Shaw-Huckaby, was simply phenomenal in the 4×400 meter relay. They won their heat easily, clocking in at an amazing 3:34.29—a full ten seconds faster than second-place competitor Mississippi State. This solid performance not only secured their heat win but also placed them overall second at the meet!
But the excitement didn’t stop there. UCF’s B team—which included Pulliam, sophomore Brianna Rodriguez, fifth-year Jasmine Jolly, and freshman Raquel Edwards—also strutted their stuff, winning their heat with a time of 3:52.00, placing them tenth overall.
The UCF squad faced off against a formidable field of competitors, including renowned institutions like Clemson, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Auburn, and Georgia Tech. The fierce rivalry only added more spark to the event as the athletes competed across multiple disciplines like long jump, 5000 meters, and 60-meter hurdles, making it a thrilling two-day showcase of athletic talent.
As the dust settles on this exciting meet, the Knights will set their sights on their next challenge—the Stan Scott Invite hosted by Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Running from Thursday to Saturday, the anticipation is already building to see what the talented UCF team will produce next!
