Orlando is buzzing with excitement after the UCF women’s tennis team delivered an impressive performance against Florida International University (FIU) this past Sunday. Playing at the state-of-the-art USTA National Campus, the Knights stormed to a decisive 4-1 victory that has fans cheering and hoping for even more success this season!
The Knights, who are currently ranked No. 20 nationally, are on a hot streak, having won four consecutive matches. They have shown exceptional teamwork and skill, making their supporters proud with each swing of the racket. Freshmen Aya El Aouni and Jade Psonka have been standout players so far, remaining utterly undefeated in their singles matches this season. Their determination and talent are becoming a key part of the team’s overall success.
The day began with doubles matches, where UCF quickly established a commanding lead. The duo of El Aouni and fellow freshman Olivia Lincer kicked things off with a resounding victory on court one, winning their match with a score of 6-1. Not to be outdone, the partnership of senior Sophia Biolay and freshman Olivia Bergler mirrored their success on court two with another 6-1 victory. While the third court had a match underway featuring freshmen Hannah Rylatt and Psonka, their match went unfinished as they were trailing with a score of 2-4.
Before the singles matches got underway, a heavy downpour delayed play as the players had to wait for the courts to dry. Weather can be unpredictable, but the UCF team showed resilience, ready to take their turn once the skies cleared. Senior Biolay was quick to jump back into action, becoming the first to secure another win for UCF in singles play, defeating FIU’s Valery Gynina with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Following closely behind, El Aouni maintained the momentum, taking down FIU’s Oyinlomo Quadre with an identical score of 6-2, 6-2.
However, things took a turn when Katerina Mandelikova from FIU managed to score a victory on court four, overpowering UCF’s Olivia Bergler, causing a slight pause in the Knights’ commanding lead at 3-1. But the excitement didn’t stop there! Freshman Jade Psonka quickly turned the tide back in favor of UCF, clinching the overall victory by defeating FIU’s Anja Draskovic with an impressive score of 7-6 (7-1), 6-0. This win marked a significant moment for both Psonka and the team, further solidifying their confidence and determination.
The momentum doesn’t end here! The UCF women’s tennis team is gearing up for its next challenge against South Florida, scheduled for noon on Sunday at the USF Varsity Tennis Complex in Tampa. With a passionate fan base behind them and a winning attitude in their pockets, this team is ready to tackle whatever comes next!
This recent victory against FIU showcases just how strong the Knights have become this season, adapting to challenges such as rain delays, all while putting their heart and soul into every match. Keep your eyes on the courts, as there’s plenty more action to come from the UCF women’s tennis team!
