The UNI men’s golf team had a challenging start to their season at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, finishing in 15th place out of 15 teams. The tournament, held in a dazzling location in California, saw teams from across the country compete under the sunny skies of Palm Desert.
It was a thrilling event, with Xavier Bighaus from Colorado Christian taking home the individual title. He played brilliantly, finishing with a remarkable score of 204, which is a fantastic -12 overall. Team victory went to Charlotte University, who combined their skills to shoot an impressive total of 833, finishing at -31 for the tournament. Clearly, they set the bar high for everyone else!
The Panthers kicked off their three-day competition with hopes high, but the first round was a tough one for the team. Leading the way for UNI was JD Pollard, who managed to pull off a score of 73, placing him tied for 46th. Not too shabby, although he would likely have preferred to see that number a bit lower!
Tanner Dinnebier, one of the promising sophomores, wasn’t far behind with a score of 75, putting him in a tie for 64th. Meanwhile, Connor VanWeelden had a bit of a rocky start with a score of 77, placing him tied for 76th. Calen Bishop had a tough day on the course, finishing with 83, landing him in 86th place while Brock Seiser shot an 85, which meant he sat in a similar position at 90th. The first day buzzed with the spirit of competition, but it was evident the team had some ground to cover.
After a night to regroup, the UNI team came back for round two with a bit more energy. Tanner Dinnebier rose to the occasion, showing resilience by shooting another impressive 73, and tying up with JD Pollard, who also came in with a score of 75. Both players climbed to a tie for 59th place overall.
Connor VanWeelden followed closely behind with a score of 75, tying him for 72nd. Calen Bishop managed to buckle down a bit with a score of 78, and Brock Seiser battled through to finish with 81. The day brought mixed results, but the team showed promise in the second round against some stiff competition.
As the final round rolled around, the team remained focused. JD Pollard again proved to be the leading player for UNI with a score of 79, wrapping up the tournament tied for 71st with a total of 227. Connor VanWeelden followed closely, finishing at 228 after scoring 76, landing him in a tie for 73rd.
Tanner Dinnebier finished tied for 76th with a score of 81, totaling to 229. Meanwhile, Calen Bishop ended at 88th with a total score of 240 after shooting 79, and Brock Seiser, had a tougher time in his last round, scoring 92, which left him in 90th with a total score of 258.
While 15th place isn’t exactly what the Panthers hoped for, it is just the beginning of the season. The team has a chance to bounce back as they prepare for their next challenge at the SDSU Jackrabbit Invitational happening from March 7-8. They will be hitting the greens at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada, and with a bit of practice and determination, fans are hopeful that the Panthers will be ready to shine. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and cheer for the UNI men’s golf team as they work their way up this season!
