The incident also claimed the lives of three others and has left many in disbelief and sadness. Friends, family, and classmates gathered to honor Sammy at a heartfelt funeral service, reflecting on his kind nature and promising future as he was set to attend Duke University. The community stands united in grief, and support initiatives are underway for students coping with this tragedy.
Windermere, a close-knit community, is in mourning following the tragic loss of Sammy Lahik, an 18-year-old senior at Windermere High School. On the night of March 1, 2025, a devastating car accident claimed the lives of four individuals, including Sammy, leaving family, friends, and classmates grappling with disbelief and sorrow.
The accident occurred around 10:50 p.m. on Central Florida Parkway, close to Whitley Place. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the crash involved a speeding Toyota Camry and a BMW M2. Sammy was a passenger in the Camry, which was being driven by a 20-year-old man from Kissimmee. In a harrowing turn of events, the BMW attempted to overtake the Camry but collided with its front left side, sending both vehicles spiraling off the road. Unfortunately, the Camry crashed into a light pole and several trees during the chaotic incident.
Sammy and another passenger in the Camry were tragically pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver sustained severe injuries. In a heartbreaking twist, the 26-year-old driver of the BMW and his 23-year-old female passenger also lost their lives in the collision. As news of the crash spread, it sent shockwaves through the community, leaving so many left to wonder how something like this could happen.
Sammy Lahik was known for his kind heart and charismatic personality. As a senior, he had just received an academic scholarship to Duke University, which highlighted the bright future ahead of him. His best friend, Zakaria Taheri, often spoke of Sammy’s ability to brighten any room he entered. This scholarship was just one of the many achievements that showcased his hard work and dedication to education.
In the wake of this overwhelming loss, hundreds of friends, family members, and community members gathered at the Islamic Center of Orlando for Lahik’s funeral service. The heartfelt ceremony included a community prayer, where attendees mourned the loss of a young life that was just starting to take flight. Principal Andrew Leftakis from Windermere High School expressed deep grief for Lahik’s passing, offering heartfelt condolences to his family during this unimaginably painful time.
In a time when students may feel lost and confused, OCPS Superintendent Dr. Maria F. Vazquez emphasized the profound impact of this tragedy and announced that grief counselors would be made available to help both students and staff process their emotions. This initiative aims to provide support and create a safe space for students who might be struggling to come to terms with the emotional weight of this incident.
As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, they are looking into the possibility of speeding and potential street racing as contributing factors. This recent tragedy comes on the heels of another tragic incident where a student from Lake Nona High School lost their life in a crash, raising concerns about road safety for students across the area.
Sammy Lahik’s legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His spirit, kindness, and bright future are reminders of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones. As the community of Windermere comes together to heal, they honor a young man whose life, although cut short, made a lasting impact.
