The station plans to expand local programming significantly, increasing broadcast hours from 56 to 93 per week. This decision comes as part of WPLG’s commitment to focus on community engagement and local news, avoiding layoffs and bolstering local talent. As WPLG pivots away from ABC, viewers can expect enhanced coverage and new job opportunities in Miami’s media landscape.

Miami TV Station Makes Big Changes: A New Era for Local Broadcasting

Miami is buzzing with exciting news as WPLG-TV, affectionately known as Local 10, gears up to end its almost 70-year affiliation with the ABC television network. The announcement hit the airwaves on March 20, 2025, during an all-hands meeting led by WPLG’s CEO & President. Get ready, because some major changes are coming this summer!

A Parting of Ways

Starting August 4, 2025, WPLG will be pulling ABC programming from its lineup. It’s a moment that feels like the conclusion of an era, with WPLG having partnered with ABC since the 1950s. After numerous attempts to negotiate a deal, the two parties couldn’t reach a mutual agreement. WPLG had put forth what they described as a generous offer but ultimately decided that the best course of action was to go in a different direction.

WPLG’s leadership emphasized that they are prioritizing the future of the station and its commitment to the local community. Avoiding layoffs—a concern that has been a serious challenge for many broadcast stations—played a significant role in the decision to end the long-standing partnership. The goal is to bolster local programming, allowing WPLG to focus on enhancing its service to viewers right here in Miami.

More Local Programming? Yes, Please!

Fans of Local 10 are in for a treat! As they transition away from ABC, WPLG is ramping up its local news and sports programming. Specifically, they will be increasing their programming hours from 56 hours per week to an impressive 93 hours starting on August 4. This truly reflects a commitment to shedding light on stories that matter most to Miami residents.

Mark your calendars for the new Local 10 News schedule! Viewers can tune in Monday through Friday starting bright and early at 4:30 a.m., and the broadcasts will continue through to 11 a.m.. Additional news slots will be available from noon to 1 p.m., 3 to 7 p.m., and from 9 to 11:30 p.m. And don’t forget about the weekends, with broadcasts from 5-11 a.m., 5-7 p.m., 9-9:30 p.m., and 11-11:30 p.m..

Sports Coverage on the Rise

Sports fans can also rejoice, as WPLG plans to expand its sports programming. The expansion will include additional editions on both Saturdays and Sundays, ensuring fans have the latest and greatest from the world of sports.

Local Hiring Spree

To support this significant expansion in local content, WPLG is on the lookout for new talent! They’ve posted dozens of job openings aimed at making Miami’s news scene even more vibrant. This hiring initiative reflects their firm belief in investing in the local community and prioritizing the coverage that truly resonates with viewers.

A Shift in ABC Programming

It’s worth noting that following the end of this historic partnership, Disney will be shifting ABC programming to another station, which will rebrand itself as ABC Miami come August 4, 2025. While it’s a bittersweet goodbye to a network that helped shape television in the region, WPLG is ready and eager to embrace a bright future.

Looking Ahead

The leadership at WPLG is optimistic about the road ahead. There’s a renewed focus on local broadcasting and community engagement. By investing in Miami’s stories and amplifying local voices, WPLG is looking to fortify its position as a beloved source of news and entertainment in the area.

As this new chapter unfolds, Miamians can expect more of the content they love and a stronger connection with the stories that matter to them. Stay tuned for what’s next for Local 10, because it’s going to be a thrilling ride!
